PNP boosts security in transportation hubs as Christmas exodus begins

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has rolled out stricter security measures for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Over 100,000 officers will be deployed nationwide—nearly double last year’s figure—to ensure safety in transport hubs and busy urban areas. The move follows directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to maintain public order during the peak travel season.

Millions of Filipinos are expected to travel to their home provinces in the coming weeks. To manage the surge, local police units have been ordered to boost visibility and strategically position personnel at major transport hubs. The goal is to prevent overcrowding, deter crime, and keep passenger movement smooth.

Metro Manila, Cebu City, and Davao City will receive extra attention, as they traditionally see higher security deployments during the holidays. While exact numbers per city vary each year, past operations have involved between 20,000 and 60,000 officers nationwide. This year’s deployment of over 100,000 marks a significant increase, reflecting concerns over potential disruptions during the festive period. The PNP’s plan, known as a holiday *Oplan*, focuses on high-traffic areas such as bus terminals, airports, and seaports. Officers will conduct regular patrols, assist commuters, and respond quickly to any incidents. The operation aligns with long-standing practices but scales up resources to match this year’s anticipated travel volume.

The expanded police presence will remain in place throughout the holiday season. Authorities aim to minimise risks for travellers and prevent security lapses during one of the busiest times of the year. The PNP has emphasised coordination with local governments to keep the operation effective.
