Pembroke initiates trial run for demand-driven Ottawa River public transportation service

The city of Pembroke, Ontario, has introduced a new on-demand transit service called Ottawa River Transit (ORTC). This service, a collaboration between the city and Mobility Transportation Specialists (MTS), is operated exclusively within the city limits and offers a dynamic, stop-to-stop model with virtual stops [1][2].

Schedule and Service Hours

ORTC operates on a flexible schedule, with summer hours during the initial launch period. From Monday to Wednesday, the service runs from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday see extended hours, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday service is available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. After Labour Day, the service will extend until 10 p.m. from Monday to Friday, with no service on Sundays and statutory holidays [1][2].

Route and Service Model

Three Dodge ProMaster vehicles, each equipped to accommodate up to eight passengers, will be used for ORTC service. Two vehicles will operate during peak hours, with one on standby for backup. Virtual stops are scattered throughout the city, with passengers expected to walk up to five minutes to their designated stops upon booking. Exact stop locations are provided when booking [1][2][3].

Booking and Fare

Rides can be booked at least 15 minutes in advance and up to seven days ahead. Booking methods include the Blaise Transit smartphone app, the Blaise web booking portal, or by phone with ORTC customer service. The fare for ORTC is $5 per ride, funded partly by Pembroke property taxes [1][2][4][5].

This service is a three-year pilot project aimed at improving local transit convenience and accessibility for Pembroke residents, including students and workers [2][3]. Riders are encouraged to arrive at their stop at least five minutes before the scheduled time.

Community Impact

The Pembroke Business Improvement Area (PBIA) is thrilled about the launch of ORTC, as it will make shopping, dining, and exploring downtown more accessible. Blaise Transit, the technology partner in the ORTC initiative, is also optimistic about the service's growth over the coming years [1].

The city plans a formal six-month review and survey of residents to ensure the new service meets the community's needs. Blaise Transit encourages riders to rate their experience and leave comments through the Blaise Transit app to help refine and enhance the service [1][2].
