Paves the way for the ambitious Cycle Superhighway 9 on our platform
In late 2018, Transport for London (TfL) plans to start construction on London's most ambitious Cycle Super Highway (CS9). This 5.6-mile long segregated cycle path, running from Kensington Olympia to Brentford town centre, is a significant step towards encouraging more people to cycle in the city.
The proposed route will feature a two-way segregated cycle track on Hammersmith Road, King Street, and Chiswick High Road, aiming to provide a safer and healthier environment for cyclists. Access to the South Circular from Wellesley Road and Stile Hall Gardens will be restricted for motor vehicles as part of this initiative, to improve conditions for residents, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The CS9 project is a prime example of community-led, aspirational, and complex urban cycling and walking schemes. Our website worked closely with TfL, London Borough of Hounslow, Hammersmith and Fulham, GLA, Phil Jones Associates, volunteers, and residents on this project. The final designs of CS9 were developed through extensive community engagement.
The consultation period for CS9 ended on 31 Oct 2017, and the project team worked diligently to devise a scheme that local people would want. Most residents on Wellesley Road (Hounslow) wanted restricted vehicle access to the South Circular, as 73% felt there was too much non-residential traffic.
The improvements made by CS9 aim to create healthier and safer streets for all users. In addition to the new cycle track, the project includes five new and twenty upgraded signal-controlled crossings to benefit people walking. The award-winning Collaborative Design team was heavily involved in the consultation process that led to the road closure proposal.
Our website played a key role in helping deliver the CS9 cycle superhighway scheme, one of the most challenging highway schemes our website has ever been involved in, anywhere in the UK. The project also involved Sustrans, a UK sustainable transport charity.
CS9 is not just a major scheme in London; it is an example of the work our website is doing all over the UK to deliver similar community-led cycling and walking projects. By improving conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, we can make our cities healthier, safer, and more accessible for everyone.
