Nearly a third of employees worked part-time in 2025 - Part-Time Work Surges in North Rhine-Westphalia, Reshaping the Job Market

Part-time work has grown significantly in North Rhine-Westphalia, with nearly one in three employees now working reduced hours. New figures from June 2025 show the state's part-time employment rate has climbed to 30.4%, reflecting a broader shift in working patterns across the region.

The rise in part-time roles has been particularly sharp among men. Since 2015, the number of men working part-time has jumped by over 63%. Despite this increase, women still dominate part-time employment, with half of all employed women now on reduced hours compared to just one in seven men.

Among municipalities, Sonsbeck in the Wesel district recorded the highest part-time rate last year, exceeding 51%. At the other end of the scale, Rheda-Wiedenbrück (15.6%) and Verl (15.8%) had the lowest rates in the state.

Overall, around 7.3 million people in NRW held jobs subject to social security contributions as of June 30, 2025. The data highlights how part-time work has become a key feature of the state's labour market.

The latest figures confirm part-time employment as a major trend in North Rhine-Westphalia. With over 30% of workers now in reduced-hour roles, the shift is reshaping the job market. The data also underscores the persistent gender gap, as women continue to make up the majority of part-time employees.
