Rob Whyte, UK and Ireland Managing Director at our company, shares his excitement: "We are all beyond proud to witness the Class 730/2 fleet – born and bred in the UK at our very own Derby facility – hit the tracks. These trailblazers symbolize a major leap forward in sustainable, high-capacity rail travel, shining a light on the unparalleled dedication and skill of our staff."
And the lovefest keeps rollin': "This monumental moment underscores our commitment to delivering innovation that redefines the passenger experience and paves the way for the future of British rail," he adds.
FYI, the Class 730/2 fleet belongs to the Aventra family – an alliance of environmentally-friendly electric multiple-unit trains. A total of 2,660 cars have been produced at our Derby Litchurch Lane Works since 2015 – that's the biggest train manufacturing campaign in decades!
The initial Class 730/2 train set off from London Euston to Northampton on Monday 9 June 2025, (units 730213 and 730233) following a fabulous launch event at Euston on Friday 6 June, attended by the likes of Rob Whyte, Andy Butters, Peter Broadley, and Adrian Grigg.
London Northwestern Railway Managing Director Ian McConnell couldn't contain his enthusiasm: "Our marvelous Class 730/2 fleet is the cornerstone of our £1 billion investment into the railway. They will make a world of difference, offering more seating and modern features to the masses of commuters and vacation travelers utilizing our services daily."
Out with the old and in with the new! The new Class 730/2 features 406 plush seats per train, far exceeding the average of 233 seats available on Class 350 trains. Several trains will run in pairs, providing 812 seats across 10 carriages – that's more than an average 12-carriage Class 350 train!
London Northwestern Railway is part of West Midlands Trains, a train operating company that also runs West Midlands Railway services. The Class 730/2 is just the cherry on top of their success, following the successful rollout of the Derby-built three-carriage Class 730/0s across the West Midlands Railway network. These babies already charm travelers on the favored Cross-City Line in Birmingham, between Wolverhampton and Walsall, and between Rugeley and Birmingham International.
