Opening of the Second Bridge for Foot and Bicycle Traffic Scheduled for August
Magdeburg's New Ring Bridges Over Damaschkeplatz Take Shape
The city of Magdeburg is making significant strides in the construction of its new ring bridges over the Damaschkeplatz. The project, which has been in the works for some time, is progressing steadily, with the second temporary bridge set to be slid into place next week.
A photo taken by Vincent Gulatz for Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg shows workers meticulously checking that the bridge is correctly positioned in the guide over the piers. This careful approach is a testament to the city's commitment to quality and safety in the construction process.
The temporary crossing for pedestrians and cyclists will close on August 4th and be dismantled to make way for the new structures. Connection work on the roadway will begin after the second temporary bridge is slid into place.
The new ring bridges over the Damaschkeplatz are planned with an integrated and semi-integrated design, aiming to use as few maintenance-intensive components as possible. The total length of each steel bridge will be approximately 70 meters, providing a sturdy and efficient solution for the city's infrastructure.
The city council approved the construction of the temporary bridges with an investment volume of around 4.5 million euros on June 19th. The construction of the new ring bridges over the Damaschkeplatz is currently ongoing, with the progress being able to be followed live and in a time-lapse review at www.magdeburg.de/ErsatzneubauRingbruecken.
Initial bridge variants for the future ring bridges over the Damaschkeplatz can also be viewed on the same website. The new ring bridges over the Damaschkeplatz will use large spans, which will contribute to their modern and sleek design.
Trams are expected to resume service over the Damaschkeplatz by the end of August due to delays in the overhead wire installation. A pedestrian and cycle path, approximately 3.50 meters wide, will open beneath the bridges on August 1st, providing a safe and convenient route for locals and visitors alike.
Both temporary bridges are expected to be accessible in one direction each from August 11th, marking a significant milestone in the project's development. For the most accurate and updated information, consulting local Magdeburg infrastructure or city planning announcements would be necessary.
The demolition of the structurally unsound bridge structures at the Damaschkeplatz took place on June 16, 2025, paving the way for the new bridges to be built. Debris removal and clearing took place during daylight hours from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM after the demolition.
The new ring bridges over the Damaschkeplatz are set to be an integral part of Magdeburg's modern and efficient infrastructure, improving connectivity and enhancing the city's overall appeal. The project is a testament to the city's commitment to progress and its dedication to providing the best possible living conditions for its residents and visitors.
The temporary bridges for pedestrians and cyclists, funded by an investment of around 4.5 million euros, are a crucial part of the transport industry in Magdeburg. As the construction of the new ring bridges progresses, the city's finance sector will play a significant role in sustaining the project, ensuring the city's infrastructure transportation remains efficient and modern.
Thanks to the new ring bridges' large spans, the design will not only improve connectivity across Magdeburg but also contribute to the city's modern and sleek appeal, enhancing its status in the transportation and industry sectors.
