Opella launches two new remedies for persistent cough and throat relief

Opella has expanded its range of cough treatments with two new products. Mucosan lozenges, containing ectoin, target dry coughs and sore throats, while Mucosilent offers a levodropropizine-based suppressant. Both aim to provide relief for common respiratory irritations.

The company follows earlier efforts in the market, including discontinued ectoin lozenges under the Pari Protect brand.

Mucosan lozenges work by using ectoin, a natural compound from salt-tolerant microbes. This substance binds water tightly, forming a protective layer over mucous membranes. The effect helps shield against dryness, allergens, and irritation, easing symptoms like hoarseness and throat discomfort.

The lozenges are sugar-free and approved for children aged six and above. Classified as a medical device, they address dry coughs, sore throats, and related issues without requiring a prescription.

A clinical study referenced by Opella found that ectoin lozenges outperformed hyaluronic acid-based alternatives in relieving acute pharyngitis. Pari had previously sold similar ectoin products under the Pari Protect name before discontinuing them.

Meanwhile, Mucosilent contains levodropropizine, a cough suppressant reclassified as non-prescription nearly four years ago. It blocks cough receptors in the bronchi and counters bronchospasms caused by histamine, serotonin, and bradykinin. Ratiopharm markets the dry cylinder version of this product under the Mucosilent name.

Opella’s latest additions offer targeted relief for cough and throat irritation. Mucosan’s ectoin-based formula moistens and protects, while Mucosilent’s levodropropizine suppresses cough reflexes. Both products expand non-prescription options for respiratory discomfort.
