A Major Oil Spill Hits the Yenisei River
Here's the lowdown: An oil disaster sprawled across the Yenisei River, as reported by Yuri Ozerov, head of Kazachinsky District, Krasnoyarsk Region.
The disaster unfolded when preparations were underway to salvage a submerged vessel at the Kazachinsky rapids, Ozerov revealed.
"Ever since yesterday evening, emergency teams have been relentlessly battling the oil spill, deploying booms and treating the affected water area with sorbents," the update mentioned.
Ozerov urged residents of neighboring settlements to abstain from using the Yenisei water for drinking or household purposes.
According to RBC Group, around 30 tons of diesel fuel gushed from a perforated vessel, following an accident on the Yenisei. This vessel, towing two unattended barges, suffered a collision with the Kazachinsky rapids, sustaining a hole and harm to the rudder. Subsequently, the ship's fuel tank was breached, leading to the diesel fuel leak.[1]
The fuel slick adorned the shores of Piskunovka and Momotovo. After the accident, an emergency situation was announced in three districts of Krasnoyarsk Krai on June 12, and Ozerov confirmed on June 20 that rescuers had effectively contained the disaster.[2] In just one day, over 10 kilometers of riverbank and about 7,500 square meters of water surface were cleaned.[3]
