Offshore wind farm Neart na Gaoithe's Operations and Maintenance base now operational for commercial purposes
Neart na Gaoithe Wind Farm's Operations Base Opens in Eyemouth
The Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) wind farm's operations and maintenance (O&M) base, located in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, has officially been opened. This purpose-built facility serves as the central hub supporting the offshore wind farm's functionality.
The base includes a 1,040-square-metre, three-story operations and maintenance building and an additional 538-square-metre storage facility. These facilities will support comprehensive operational and maintenance activities necessary for the wind farm’s sustained performance.
The NnG O&M base is home to around 27 staff members employed in both office-based and operational roles. Plans are in place for the base to provide about 50 permanent jobs over the next 25 years, reflecting its long-term role in the local community and economy.
The wind farm, jointly owned by EDF Renewables and ESB, will consist of 54 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW wind turbines. Offshore construction at the project site is well underway, with the first ten wind turbine jacket foundations already installed.
The wind farm's 450 MW capacity will generate clean energy for approximately 375,000 homes and contribute to reducing over 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
The NnG O&M base significantly benefits the local Eyemouth community by providing high-quality permanent employment and enabling industry-community collaboration. The wind farm development contributed substantially to the Scottish economy during construction, involving over 50 local suppliers, and continues to provide ongoing economic benefits via this base.
Upon completion, the Neart na Gaoithe wind farm will be a significant addition to Scotland's renewable energy portfolio, bringing additional economic benefits to the surrounding area. The first units of the wind farm are planned to be operational in mid-2023.
The NnG O&M base, located in Eyemouth, will be integral to the finance of the renewable-energy industry, providing ongoing economic benefits to the local community. The wind farm, upon completion, will contribute significantly to Scotland's renewable-energy industry by generating clean energy for hundreds of thousands of homes and reducing carbon dioxide emissions annually.
