North Lincolnshire Council Approves Major Carbon Capture Project in Humber

North Lincolnshire Council has given the green light to a major carbon capture project in the Humber region. The project, led by VPI, has received planning consent and could significantly boost the UK's race for carbon capture hubs.

VPI's permit allows for the installation of the first amine-based carbon capture system in the UK, a technology granted full regulatory approval. The company, Drax Group, will implement this system, marking a significant step forward for the Humber in its bid to become a leading carbon capture hub.

The Humber initiative has the potential to attract £13 billion ($17.5 billion) in private investment and create 20,000 jobs. This is thanks to the project's aim to capture up to 3.3 million tonnes of CO2 annually, feeding into the Viking CCS network. The Environment Agency has also approved Shell's Cansolv system for installation at VPI's Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant.

With planning consent granted and significant investment and job creation on the horizon, the Humber's carbon capture project is poised to make a substantial impact on the UK's net-zero goals. The project's progress places the Humber at the forefront of the national race for carbon capture hubs.
