North Carolina's Business Dominance Persists, Securing Its Position as the Leading State in 2025

In the latest CNBC "America's Top States for Business" ranking, North Carolina once again secured the top spot, marking its third win in four years. However, the state's performance in the Quality of Life category left room for improvement, landing it in the 29th position nationally.

Despite North Carolina's economic success, the state's business climate is vulnerable to external risks such as tariffs and disasters, which could impact residents' well-being. One of the key concerns raised by CNBC was an "almost complete lack of worker protections" in the state, which adversely affects the quality of life for workers.

Another area of concern is the state's insufficient anti-discrimination laws, particularly in public accommodations. This was highlighted as a quality of life concern that requires attention.

Governor Josh Stein acknowledged the middling quality of life score, despite praising other strengths in the state. He underscored this as an area needing improvement.

Despite these challenges, North Carolina continues to attract significant investments from companies like JetZero and Amazon, generating thousands of jobs and stimulating economic growth.

In a positive note, the University of South Carolina's International MBA Program ranked surprisingly high, although it was not mentioned in the initial CNBC ranking.

Ohio rounded out the Top 5, with Florida coming in third, leading in the "Economy" category for the third year. Texas followed as the runner-up, and Virginia slipped to fourth place. Louisiana, Rhode Island, Montana, Hawaii, and Alaska were among the states at the bottom of the CNBC ranking.

The ranking was based on 10 areas, with the "Economy" category accounting for 17.8% of the total score. The Cost of Doing Business, Business Friendliness, Education, Technology & Innovation, Quality of Life, Access to Capital, and Cost of Living were also evaluated. Each category held a significant weight in the overall score, with the Cost of Doing Business and Cost of Living categories indirectly relating to quality of life issues.

Massachusetts made a significant comeback as this year's "Most Improved State" in the CNBC ranking.

As North Carolina continues to thrive economically, efforts to address its Quality of Life concerns are crucial to ensure a balanced and sustainable growth for the state.

The concern over North Carolina's nearly non-existent worker protections in the industry could cause a shift in the global trade landscape, affecting its business climate.

Enhancing North Carolina's anti-discrimination laws within the business sector could significantly improve its Quality of Life category in global rankings.
