North Africa's 5G race accelerates with Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco leading the charge
North Africa's 5G landscape has evolved rapidly since early 2025. Tunisia led the way by launching the region's first 5G network in February that year, with Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco following in quick succession. Each country has since shown distinct trends in speed, coverage, and user experience as adoption grows.
Tunisia became the first North African nation to introduce 5G in February 2025. Early speeds were high, but performance has since stabilised as more users joined the network. The country now reports a more balanced experience, with improved stability despite heavier traffic.
Egypt followed in June 2025, using its existing 2.6 GHz spectrum for initial 5G services. This approach led to a slower performance boost compared to neighbours deploying dedicated mid-band frequencies. Over time, however, Egypt's network has grown steadier as infrastructure matures. Algeria launched its 5G network in December 2025, leveraging the 3.5 GHz band for faster speeds. The country now records the highest peak 5G speeds in the region, though consistency varies across different areas. Meanwhile, Morocco began its rollout a month earlier, in November 2025, also using mid-band spectrum. Both Algeria and Morocco continue to see rising 5G speeds as coverage expands and user numbers remain relatively low. Their networks benefit from less congestion, allowing for stronger performance gains compared to Tunisia and Egypt.
The region's 5G development reflects varied strategies and outcomes. Tunisia and Egypt prioritise stability, while Algeria and Morocco focus on speed and expansion. As adoption increases, each country's network will likely face new challenges in maintaining performance.
