Nissan Triples Renewable Energy at Sunderland Plant, Plans EV Battery Gigafactory
Nissan is boosting its sustainability efforts at the Sunderland Plant. The company aims to triple on-site renewable energy production, with plans to install 37,000 solar panels and build a new EV battery gigafactory.
The expansion will significantly increase the plant's solar energy output to 32MW, covering 20% of its energy needs. This is enough to power the production of every LEAF sold in Europe. Alan Johnson, VP Manufacturing at Nissan Sunderland, reaffirmed the company's commitment to sustainability.
The new EV battery gigafactory, to be built by AESC, will have a production capacity of 15.8 GWh. The £1 billion funding secured in May 2025 will support this project. Nissan will also add 37,000 solar panels, generating an additional 20MW of clean energy.
Nissan will share details of the solar farm expansion with the local community this week and submit a full planning application later in the year. The company's goal is to make its manufacturing process more sustainable, with increased renewable energy production playing a key role.
