Nio Expands Battery Swap Network Across China

Electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is making significant strides in expanding its battery swap infrastructure across China. As of mid-2025, the company operates approximately 3,442 battery swap stations nationwide [2][5].

In a bid to create a dense battery swap network, Nio plans to build between 1,800 and 2,000 new battery swap stations in China by the end of 2025 as part of their "Power Up Counties" plan [3]. This ambitious goal, if achieved, would significantly increase the number of battery swap stations, covering all counties in 27 provinces. This reflects a figure close to or somewhat above 5,000 stations nationwide once the year's build targets are met.

Nio Power, the company responsible for the construction of Nio's charging and battery swap network, recently signed a collaboration agreement with Jiangsu Financial Leasing. This agreement, signed in Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu, aims to add 100 battery swap stations in the province [2]. The collaboration also includes plans to jointly build 100 energy replenishment facilities supporting battery swapping and charging in Jiangsu.

The latest collaboration marks the fifth bulk construction agreement for battery swap stations reached by Nio Power since October last year. The agreement aims to make the region's network more dense and provides a mature path and replicable model for the nationwide layout of the battery swap network.

In addition to the battery swap stations, Nio's charging map has access to more than 1.31 million third-party charging stations [6]. The company also plans to provide sales financing solutions for its Onvo sub-brand in the field of automotive financial services through this collaboration [4].

Nio announced the Power Up Counties plan at the Nio Power Up 2024 event on August 20, 2024. The plan aims to cover all counties in 27 provincial-level administrative regions with its battery swap station network by December 31, 2025 [1]. The company is currently falling behind its 2025 new station construction targets, having added only 384 new stations in the first half of 2025 [1][3]. However, a ramp-up in station openings in the latter half of the year is expected to help meet the annual goal.

This strategic push by Nio reflects its commitment to creating a comprehensive battery swap network across China by the end of 2025. The company also plans to continue expansion deals, such as the recent agreement to add 100 swap stations in northeast China, to further bolster its infrastructure [2].
