NFL Faces a Sizable Challenge in Selling Its Massive Empire
Dallas Cowboys Lead the Pack in NFL Team Valuations
The Dallas Cowboys are set to break new ground in the National Football League (NFL) as they are predicted to be the only team with a valuation exceeding $12 billion in 2025, specifically at $12.8 billion. This impressive figure places the Cowboys at the top of the NFL franchises' worth, leading by a significant margin.
Three teams are expected to have valuations of $10 billion or more in 2025. These include the Cowboys, the Los Angeles Rams with a valuation of $10.43 billion, and the New York Giants, valued at $10.25 billion. Other highly valuable teams include the New England Patriots, with a valuation of $8.76 billion, and the San Francisco 49ers, valued at $8.6 billion.
The average NFL franchise value in 2025 is estimated at $7.13 billion, marking a 20% increase from 2024. This growth is partly due to the NFL's allowance for minority ownership sales and business-related ventures like real estate and events.
| Team | 2025 Valuation | |-------------------|-----------------| | Dallas Cowboys | $12.8 billion | | Los Angeles Rams | $10.43 billion | | New York Giants | $10.25 billion |
Other franchises, including the Patriots and 49ers, are approaching the $9 billion range but have not yet reached $10 billion.
Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers, an NBA team, are on the verge of being sold. Tom Dundon, the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes, has reached a tentative agreement to buy the team. The sale price is reported to be approximately $4.25 billion, making it one of the most expensive NBA team sales in history.
In contrast, the NFL remains the richest sports league in the world, with an annual revenue of $23 billion. All 32 NFL teams rank among the 43 most valuable franchises in North American sports. However, the NFL has stricter ownership rules, including a 24-owner cap on ownership group size, a relatively low debt limit, and new control owners needing to put down 30% in cash.
The least valuable NFL team is the Cincinnati Bengals, with a value of $5.5 billion. Despite some family members exploring potential sale options, the Minnesota Twins will remain under the control of the Pohlad family.
The media money in the NFL is on stable footing, bolstered by a new ESPN tie-up. Additionally, the NFL has an opt-out of its $110 billion in broadcast partnership after the 2029 season.
This article does not involve any NFL teams, except for the fact that the Cowboys are the most valuable team in the league. The sale of the Portland Trail Blazers is a separate matter and does not affect any NFL teams.
