Newly Arrived Trams Ready for Service: 30 Vehicles Join DVB's Fleet

Dresden's public transport has welcomed its new fleet of 30 tram cars, slated for delivery at the end of the year. The last vehicle marked the completion of deliveries and commenced a four-week trial run with passengers just before Christmas. Immediately following the trial, the tram was put into service on lines 2, 3, and 10, with future expansion planned.

Manufactured by Alstom, these trams were sourced following a Europe-wide tender in August 2019. The production took place in Görlitz and Bautzen. The fleet includes 21 single-direction vehicles and 9 bi-directional ones featuring a driver's cab at both ends and doors on both sides. The transport operator, DVB, retains the option to order ten more vehicles of the same type, with three already ordered for delivery in the summer of 2024.

The new tram cars boast a 35 cm wider body, measuring 2.65 meters in width. They offer more passenger seating than the previous trams, accommodating up to 290 passengers. The vehicles now have four multifunctional areas for wheelchairs or strollers, double the previous number. Six doors facilitate quick and safe entry and exit, while LED light strips inside and outside the doors dictate boarding and exiting.

Dresden's public transport system is committed to service enhancements, as evidenced by increased tram frequency on key routes during special events. The city is likely to continue investing in modern rolling stock, infrastructure renewal, and service optimization as part of sustainable urban mobility trends in European cities.

The industry partnership between Dresden and Alstom resulted in the sourcing and production of a new tram fleet for Dresden's public-transit system, consisting of 21 single-direction and 9 bi-directional vehicles, which will be utilized in the transportation sector, particularly on lines 2, 3, and 10. The finance department of Dresden's transport operator, DVB, retains the option for future expansion by ordering ten more vehicles.
