New Zealand's Berry Scene Booms With World's Largest Blueberries
New Zealand's berry scene is set to expand with the arrival of the world's largest blueberry variety, Eterna. The Fresh Berry Company, in partnership with Driscoll's, is bringing these monster-sized berries to Kiwi supermarket shelves next year.
The Eterna variety, known for producing blueberries as large as a ping-pong ball, will be cultivated in plastic tunnel houses across the Kerikeri and Waikato regions. Some of these giant berries, weighing up to 20.4 grams, will be exported. The company's general manager, Simon Tallon, is overseeing this cultivation, marking a significant step for New Zealand's berry industry.
Last year, New Zealand's berry market was valued at $120 million. The Fresh Berry Company's new farm in Nelson, set to begin production next year, is expected to contribute to this growing news. Meanwhile, a bumper crop of strawberries is anticipated leading up to Christmas, with growers in Hawke's Bay, Waikato, and Northland preparing for a fruitful season.
The Fresh Berry Company, in collaboration with Driscoll's, is introducing the world's largest blueberry variety to New Zealand. These giant Eterna blueberries, after rigorous pest and disease testing, will hit supermarket shelves in limited quantities later next year. The company's expansion into Nelson and its partnership in Kerikeri and Waikato regions promise an exciting future for New Zealand's berry industry.
