A new ZDF series called Take the Money and Run explores the rise and fall of Ruja Ignatova, the woman behind the fake crypto currency OneCoin. Ignatova vanished in 2017 with billions after her scheme collapsed. Actress Nilam Farooq plays her in the show and has shared her thoughts on the case.
Ruja Ignatova was once a powerful figure in the crypto world. Her OneCoin project promised huge returns but turned out to be a massive fraud. By October 25, 2017, she had disappeared, leaving investors with heavy losses. The FBI still lists her as one of its most wanted fugitives.
Nilam Farooq, who portrays Ignatova in the series, believes the missing woman may no longer be alive. Another theory she suggests is that Ignatova could be hiding on a yacht in international waters. Farooq admits she enjoys crypto for the opportunities it brings but also recognises its limitations. Ignatova’s obsession with wealth went far beyond reason. Even with an estimated ten billion at her disposal, she continued chasing more. Farooq describes this as an addiction that destroyed her moral judgement. Meanwhile, Ignatova’s husband and daughter now live near Frankfurt, where her husband faces a new trial.
The ZDF series brings fresh attention to the OneCoin scandal and Ignatova’s mysterious disappearance. Her family remains in Germany, but her own whereabouts are still unknown. The upcoming trial of her husband may provide further details about the case.
