Netflix's East Coast Production Hub Takes Shape
Netflix commences construction on extensive production facility in New Jersey
In a move that signals a significant boost to the American film industry, Netflix has begun construction on a revolutionary $1 billion production facility at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. The groundbreaking ceremony, held in May 2025, marked the beginning of transforming the former U.S. Army installation into a premier East Coast production hub.
This renovation project includes twelve cutting-edge soundstages, totaling close to half a million square feet. The facilities will also house space for supporting film needs and offer community amenities.
At the groundbreaking, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, expressed his pride in investing in American creativity and the local community. He emphasized the potential for thousands of job creations, billions in economic output, and various cultural benefits for the region and state. Since 2016, Netflix has been contributing substantially to the US economy, investing $125 billion and employing over 140,000 cast and crew members.
Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey highlighted the project's economic and cultural importance, referring to the Garden State's historical link to the motion picture industry. He welcomed Netflix to New Jersey, expressing enthusiasm for the studio's potential to bolster the state's reputation as a worldwide leader in film and television production, enticing renowned filmmakers and creators to the region.
In 2022, plans were announced to convert Fort Monmouth, which had lain vacant for more than a decade, into a production facility expected to become a vital engine of local economic growth. The project is slated to create a considerable number of permanent production jobs and construction-related positions.
Netflix collaborated with the cities of Eatontown and Oceanport, as well as Monmouth County, during the last three years to secure approvals for the initial phase of the proposed Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth. Demolition is anticipated to take approximately 13 months, with an anticipated 2028 opening date. However, further approvals are necessary before construction on the studio complex can commence in full.
While the project is being developed in two phases, the initial phase will focus on the McAfee Zone in Oceanport, which will include four soundstages and a dedicated campus for production. The project is currently under review by the Eatontown planning board, with a decision expected in August 2025.
