Netflix buys Ben Affleck's AI firm to slash production costs by billions

Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI firm founded by Ben Affleck, in a deal worth up to $600 million. The move aims to cut production costs using advanced technology. Affleck stated the company's mission is to protect human creativity while improving efficiency.

InterPositive's tools promise major savings for film and TV production. Netflix estimates potential reductions of $8.43 billion to $16.86 billion if costs drop by 20% on original content. For a single unidentified project, the company claimed it could save $7 million from a $32.1 million below-the-line budget.

Background actors and stand-ins could see cost cuts of up to 70%. Visual effects expenses might also fall by 50%. Overall, below-the-line production costs could shrink by 10% to 20%. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix's Chief Technology and Product Officer, described the acquisition as part of the company's 'responsible' AI strategy. After the deal, InterPositive's technology will be used only on Netflix's in-house productions. The final purchase price may vary, depending on whether performance targets are met. Affleck emphasised that the tools are designed to 'preserve what makes storytelling human' while streamlining workflows.

The acquisition positions Netflix to reduce spending significantly on original shows and films. InterPositive's AI will now operate exclusively within the streaming giant's production pipeline. The deal reflects Netflix's push to balance cost efficiency with creative control.
