Nelson’s economy reels as major employers slash jobs in October
The Nelson region has been hit by significant job cuts, with several major employers announcing closures and layoffs. Sealord, Carter Holt Harvey, Griffin's Snacks, and Kono have all been affected, with the most recent news breaking in mid-October.
One of the hardest-hit sites is Sealord's wetfish factory in Nelson. The facility, which operates seasonally from May to September, will close in December and reopen in May. This has resulted in 48 job losses. The decision comes amidst a challenging market, with export products making a loss every month except during the hoki season. This is due to recent price drops, sharp cost increases, and falling fish volumes.
Sealord's chief executive Doug Paulin has stated that the move to seasonal operations retains most of the Nelson-based operations and saves over 90% of the economic benefits to the region. This announcement follows Sealord's takeover of Independent Fisheries in New Zealand, confirmed in February 2024.
The Nelson region continues to grapple with significant job losses, with Sealord's wetfish factory closure being the latest blow. Despite the challenges, the company aims to retain most of its Nelson operations and maintain a significant economic presence in the region.
