Mumbai’s Hoover Dam Project Nears Tender Stage Despite Pending Wildlife Clearances

The Hoover Dam project, estimated to cost Rs 3,105 crore, will involve constructing a one-kilometre tunnel linking it to the Modak Sagar Dam. For the 2025-26 financial year, Rs 35.51 crore has been set aside for the initial phase. However, key clearances from the National Wildlife Board and the Forest Department remain pending.

The dam’s construction will impact six villages within the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, with two villages set to be fully submerged. Additionally, nearly three lakh trees will be felled, though compensatory afforestation is planned across 510 hectares. Despite these challenges, the BMC is expected to invite tenders for the project within the coming week.

Once completed, the Hoover Dam will significantly boost Mumbai’s water supply by 440 MLD. The project’s progress depends on securing the remaining approvals and overcoming environmental concerns. If successful, it will ease the city’s ongoing water crisis in the years ahead.
