Moscow Resident Files for Bankruptcy After Cat's Medical Treatment
A Moscow resident has filed for personal bankruptcy after spending over 300,000 rubles (around $3,200) on medical treatment for his 19-year-old cat. The man took out bank loans to cover the costs, but the animal’s illness ultimately proved fatal.
The cat suffered from urolithiasis, a condition requiring multiple surgeries and ongoing care. To afford the treatment, the owner borrowed money from banks. However, the debt quickly grew as penalties and interest piled up.
By the time the cat passed away, the total amount owed had reached 1.2 million rubles (around $12,800). Unable to repay the loans, the man applied for personal bankruptcy.
The case highlights the financial strain that emergency veterinary care can place on pet owners. Despite the owner’s efforts, the cat did not recover, leaving behind a debt that led to legal bankruptcy proceedings.
