Microsoft Fabric upgrades data tools with dbt Core and enhanced security in 2026
Microsoft has rolled out new tools and integrations for its Fabric platform, aiming to strengthen data transformation and governance. The updates, announced in March 2026, include first-class dbt Core adapters, expanded Fabric Data Agents, and improved network security for Azure Cosmos DB Mirroring. These changes are designed to help businesses manage data more efficiently while keeping workflows secure and compliant.
On March 24, 2026, Microsoft unveiled dedicated dbt Core adapters for Fabric Warehouse and Lakehouse. The Warehouse adapter is now available, with the Lakehouse version set to follow shortly. Both adapters align with Fabric's native features, such as OneLake storage and enterprise-wide security policies. This integration will boost SQL-based data transformation and ensure consistent governance across lakehouse and warehouse environments.
In early March, Fabric Data Agents became generally available. These virtual analysts can be deployed within Fabric or used as a knowledge base for tools like Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studio, and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Their role is to enhance insights by adapting to specific data domains. The Fabric Local Model Context Protocol (MCP) is now fully available, while the Remote MCP remains in public preview. Additionally, private network support for Azure Cosmos DB Mirroring in Fabric has launched, enabling secure data replication without compromising compliance. Coming soon, dbt job activity will be natively supported as a task in Fabric pipelines, complete with parameter options. A Workload Admin Portal for Fabric Extensibility will also go live on April 1, 2026. This portal will provide centralized governance and clear visibility into how organisations use Fabric resources.
The latest updates to Microsoft Fabric focus on improving data transformation, security, and governance. With new dbt Core adapters, expanded agent capabilities, and stricter network controls, businesses can now handle data workflows more efficiently. These tools are expected to streamline operations while maintaining compliance with evolving regulations.
