The MENA region is becoming a key player in global higher education. New trends show students are increasingly choosing destinations within the area, driven by affordability, visa policies, and limited spaces in traditional Western universities. A recent Studyportals-British Council report highlights this shift, with growing interest in both local and international programmes across the region.

Turkey leads the region in outbound student demand at the bachelor’s level, holding a 20.6% share. Its numbers have risen by 2.7% over the past year. Meanwhile, Iran—once a dominant source market—has seen a 4.1% drop in bachelor’s-level applications.

The United Arab Emirates stands out as the top emerging study destination in MENA. Saudi Arabia is also gaining traction, thanks to heavy investment in education infrastructure and digital innovation. Other countries, including Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and Qatar, are steadily becoming more visible to prospective students.

Computer science remains the most popular field of study, reflecting national digital transformation strategies. Business and management courses are also in high demand, aligning with local job market needs. Student engagement with MENA-based programmes has now grown for three years in a row.

One key factor behind the region’s appeal is the UK’s reputation for high-quality education and strong graduate employability. Many students see MENA institutions as a more accessible alternative while still valuing Western qualifications.

The MENA region’s education sector continues to expand, shaped by affordability, strategic investments, and evolving student preferences. With Turkey and the UAE leading the way, the area is cementing its role as a dynamic force in global higher education.
