Medibank Data Breach: Law Firms Team Up for Massive Compensation Bid
A significant development in the Medibank data breach case has occurred. A cooperation agreement has been signed between the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), and several law firms to secure compensation for up to 9.7 million affected customers. The agreement was signed in September 2023, over a year after Medibank confirmed the breach on 13 October 2022.
The law firms involved in this action are Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, Bannister Law Class Actions, and Centennial Lawyers. Andrew Watson of Maurice Blackburn considers this cooperation a major step forward. The firms have already registered tens of thousands of Medibank customers for the complaint. They will now pursue a complaint with the OAIC, seeking compensation for customers whose personal information was compromised.
Charles Bannister of Bannister Law hopes this cooperation will lead swiftly to compensation payments. George Newhouse of Centennial Lawyers believes Medibank breached the Privacy Act and failed its policy holders by not adequately protecting customer data.
Affected customers can register for updates and potential compensation at www.medibankclassaction.com.au or www.mauriceblackburn.com.au. The complaint could secure compensation for up to 9.7 million customers, with the cooperation of the ACCC, OAIC, and the law firms involved. The outcome of the complaint will be closely watched by those affected.
