Matt Damon’s gluten-free diet secret for The Odyssey role revealed
Matt Damon has shared how he shed weight for his upcoming film The Odyssey. Speaking on the New Heights podcast, the actor revealed he cut gluten from his diet to reach his target. Director Christopher Nolan wanted him to appear 'lean but strong' for the role.
Damon originally weighed between 185 and 200 pounds before filming. To drop to 167 pounds, he removed gluten from his meals. This change helped reduce his intake of refined grains, which can cause inflammation and slow weight loss.
A gluten-free diet, however, does not guarantee weight loss for those without gluten sensitivities. Many gluten-free products still contain high calories and unhealthy fats. Experts warn that poorly planned gluten-free diets can lead to nutritional gaps or under-eating.
For balanced weight loss, nutritionists recommend focusing on whole foods. Gluten-free grains like quinoa, brown rice, and oats provide fibre and nutrients. Other naturally gluten-free options include rice, corn, potatoes, soy, buckwheat, millet, and amaranth. These foods support satiety while avoiding wheat, barley, and rye.
Damon’s approach highlights the importance of mindful eating, even when cutting out gluten. While his diet worked for his role, experts stress that weight loss depends on overall nutrition rather than simply avoiding gluten. A well-planned diet with protein, fibre, and complex carbohydrates remains key for sustainable results.
