Politics, Science, and Safari: Söder in South Africa - Markus Söder's South Africa Visit Yields New Biotech Initiative and Strengthened Ties

Bavaria's Minister-President Markus Söder has concluded a three-day visit to South Africa, marked by a new biotech initiative, high-level meetings, and cultural exchanges. The trip, which began on Saturday, 1st November and ended on Tuesday, 5th November 2025, saw Söder engaging with local leaders and exploring the country's rich history and culture.

Söder's visit kicked off with a gathering of leaders from Bavaria's partner regions, including South Africa's Western Cape. During this meeting, a new Bavaria-Western Cape biotech initiative was launched, aiming to foster collaboration and innovation in the life sciences sector.

The Minister-President also made time for reflection and remembrance, visiting Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned. He placed a stone on a commemorative cairn, honouring Mandela's legacy.

Political discussions were high on the agenda, with Söder meeting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship between their countries.

Söder's itinerary also included a visit to the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town, where he brought soccer balls and jerseys for the children. This gesture was warmly received, highlighting Söder's commitment to people-to-people exchanges.

In addition to these official engagements, Söder enjoyed a safari during his trip. However, his safari pictures posted on X received a mixed response from the public.

Markus Söder's visit to South Africa has drawn to a close, leaving behind a new biotech initiative and strengthened political ties. As he returns to Bavaria, Söder has signalled his intention to take a more active role in the state's foreign policy, with plans to travel more often in the future.
