Manitoba Government Invests $115 Million in Highway Improvements

The Manitoba government has announced a significant investment of $115 million in improvements along Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 2 and surrounding roads. The aim is to enhance safety, reliability, and address long-standing infrastructure challenges, particularly in western Manitoba.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor stated that these improvements are crucial in supporting the economic lifelines of agricultural producers. Premier Wab Kinew made the funding announcement in a statement on Friday.

The core of the project involves repairing and replacing structures on PTH 2, from the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border to near Winnipeg. This includes the replacement of two bridges near Highway 2 over the Assiniboine River - one on Highway 34, north of Holland, and another at Spruce Woods, an important route for access to Spruce Woods Provincial Park.

In addition to PTH 2, other roads will see improvements. For instance, 15 kilometres of Highway 5 north of Highway 2 will undergo rehabilitation, expected to lift spring road restrictions and increase permitted axle weights during thaw periods, benefiting agricultural transport. Highway 34 will also receive grading repairs, with temporary guardrails and reduced speed limits recently installed to increase safety.

The improvements are not just about safety and reliability for drivers, but also about addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges. The statement indicated that some of these roadways have been neglected for a long time, and the Manitoba government recognizes the importance of these improvements to the community.

The upgrades are aimed at ensuring safe and efficient roads for local producers, grain elevators, and community members. The Manitoba government believes these improvements will significantly boost transportation accessibility and safety on these key rural routes, supporting local farming communities and the broader economy.

A byelection in Spruce Woods must be held by mid-September. It is expected that these improvements will be completed in time to lift weight restrictions during the spring thaw on the rehabilitated section of PTH 5.
