Majority of AAPI Adults Disapprove of Trump's Immigration Policies
A new poll reveals a complex picture of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults' views on President Trump's immigration policies. Despite some groups being more likely to approve of his handling of immigration and crime, a majority disapprove of his approach, with 70% expressing dissatisfaction, up from 58% in March.
The survey highlights a nuanced stance among AAPI adults. Foreign-born adults are more likely to support deporting immigrants who have committed misdemeanors or are in the country illegally. However, even among this group, most disapprove of the president's immigration handling. AAPI adults, overall, are particularly concerned about Trump's immigration enforcement, with many believing he has gone too far. They widely oppose specific tactics such as workplace raids and the involvement of the military or National Guard in immigration enforcement.
Under Trump's leadership, along with key figures like former Homeland Security Secretaries John F. Kelly and Kirstjen Nielsen, immigration policies have been a contentious issue. Some AAPI adults acknowledge a difference between supporting immigration policies in theory and their practical implementation, suggesting a level of disillusionment with the current administration's approach.
The poll underscores the diversity of opinions within the AAPI community regarding Trump's immigration policies. While some groups show more approval, a majority of AAPI adults, including foreign-born individuals, disapprove of his handling of immigration. Their opposition to specific enforcement tactics and belief that Trump has overstepped in deportations indicates a significant level of concern and dissatisfaction with the current immigration landscape.
