All fly to Malle. Only Germans not (anymore) - Majorca's Tourism Boom Sparks 'Stay Away' Calls Amid Soaring Prices and Environmental Concerns
Majorca's tourism boom is causing concern among locals and visitors alike. While the industry accounts for over 40% of the island's economy, many Germans are now shunning the destination due to soaring prices. This has led to an unusual call for tourists to stay away, with some longtime enthusiasts heeding the plea.
The number of German visitors to the Balearic Islands has dropped by nearly 2% this year, reflecting the growing discontent. Locals are reported to be 'furious and no longer welcoming' due to the impact of tourism. Overcrowding and environmental damage have become significant issues, leading seven organizations on Mallorca to release an open letter urging visitors not to come.
Despite the concerns, from January to September, 16.6 million people visited the Balearic Islands, surpassing last year's record by 2.4%. The islands are expected to welcome over 20 million visitors in 2025 for the first time. However, this growth is not benefiting everyone. One in five Majorcans is now at risk of poverty due to the tourism influx.
The future of Majorca's tourism remains uncertain. While the industry continues to grow, the impact on locals and the environment is causing alarm. The call for tourists to stay away highlights the need for sustainable tourism practices to ensure the island's long-term prosperity and well-being.
