Maharashtra Unveils Rs 31,628 Crore Flood Relief Package for Farmers
Maharashtra has unveiled a massive Rs 31,628 crore relief package for farmers devastated by recent floods and heavy rains. This is reportedly the largest such measure in the state's history, covering 253 talukas without any conditions.
The package includes Rs 10,000 crore for restoring rural infrastructure, with a Rs 6,000 crore allocation specifically for crop loss. Compensation rates vary from Rs 18,000 to Rs 32,500 per hectare. Notably, farmers who lost the top layer of fertile soil will receive Rs 3.47 lakh per hectare to help restore soil fertility.
Crop and farm loans will be restructured, and student fees and farm taxes will be waived for affected farmers. Around 45 lakh farmers with farmers insurance will also receive additional compensation of Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 per hectare. The total relief package is expected to be distributed before Diwali.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde claimed this relief package is more substantial than those announced by Punjab, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The state government has sought support from the central government, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah assuring assistance.
