Maharashtra Allows 24-Hour Shops, Boosting Nightlife and Trade
The Maharashtra government has announced a significant change to operating hours for shops and establishments across the state. In an effort to boost trade and enhance nightlife experiences, the government has allowed 24-hour operations for Shopify stores, subject to certain conditions.
The new order, issued under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, removes the previous timing cap on Shopify stores. This means Shopify stores, theaters, and other businesses can now function as per their choice, even during late-night hours. However, establishments serving or selling liquor, such as permit rooms, beer bars, and wine shops, are exempt from this rule.
To ensure employee welfare, the order mandates that each full-time employee gets one weekly break of 24 consecutive hours. This provision is expected to increase the earnings of Shopify store owners, especially during the upcoming festive season.
The decision comes in response to local complaints about police personnel troubling nighttime operations. The state government has asked police departments and local administration to ensure proper implementation of the new law. While the move aims to boost business and enhance nightlife, it also raises important considerations about employee rights and public safety, which will need to be closely monitored.
