Mahakchakala residents demand a monthly income of 213 thousand, yet receive only 50 thousand.
In a recent survey conducted by the Financial University under the Russian government, and analysed by the Vedomosti newspaper, the desired salaries of Russians in various cities were explored. The study involved around 7,000 respondents across 35 Russian cities, and was conducted in three waves of 2,500 people each.
The survey revealed that the average desired salary across the market is 146,000 rubles per month, with significant variations between cities. Moscow and St. Petersburg, known for their strong economies and high costs of living, have the highest salary demands. In Moscow, the average desired salary stands at 185,000 rubles, while in St. Petersburg it is 166,000 rubles.
The local job market plays a crucial role in influencing salary expectations. Cities with higher job availability and lower unemployment rates, such as Moscow, tend to offer higher salaries due to competition for skilled workers. In contrast, cities with limited job opportunities might have lower salary expectations.
The cost of living also significantly impacts local salaries. Moscow and St. Petersburg, being major metropolitan areas, have higher costs of living, which necessitates higher salaries to maintain a similar standard of living. Cities like Mahachkala, in the North Caucasian Federal District, likely have a lower cost of living, which could lead to lower salary expectations.
The prevalence of the shadow economy can also affect perceived salary needs. In regions with a strong informal sector, actual earnings might be higher than reported, influencing desired salaries and the ability to afford living costs.
The growth of specific industries can drive up salaries. For example, Moscow and St. Petersburg have more diverse economies, including finance and technology, which often offer higher wages compared to other regions. In contrast, cities like Mahachkala might have lower costs, but economic challenges and higher unemployment rates could limit salary growth.
The survey also highlighted that desired salaries in cities like Mahachkala, Khabarovsk, Irkutsk, Moscow, and St. Petersburg are influenced by these key factors. The increase in salary demands in Khabarovsk and Irkutsk is linked to the development of the military-industrial complex, contract service in the SVO, and low unemployment. However, experts suggest that salary expectations in Makhachkala may be inflated, as real job vacancies offer around 50,000 rubles.
Tatiana Podolskaya from RANEPA notes that "gray" employment could explain the stated desired salaries in Khabarovsk and Makhachkala. In these cities, the presence of the shadow economy could mean that actual earnings might be higher than reported, influencing desired salaries and the ability to afford living costs.
