Macron's South Korea visit aims to boost tech and trade ties
French President Emmanuel Macron will arrive in South Korea this week for his first state visit since taking office in 2017. The trip includes summit talks with President Lee Jae Myung, scheduled for Friday, as both nations seek to strengthen ties in technology, trade, and cultural exchange. The visit comes as Korea and France prepare to mark the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. During discussions, the two leaders will focus on expanding cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, nuclear energy, and space exploration. Eleven memorandums of understanding were signed, with plans to generate 80,000 jobs and boost bilateral trade to $20 billion by 2030.
President Lee Jae Myung emphasised the importance of deeper collaboration, calling it essential for economic security and long-term stability. He described the partnership as geopolitically vital in an increasingly competitive global landscape. Beyond technology, Lee also highlighted cultural exchanges in film, music, food, and design as key to strengthening bonds between the two nations. Lee expressed hopes of moving beyond a basic partnership toward strategic coordination. He believes joint efforts in innovation will enhance resilience and create new opportunities for both countries.
The state visit marks a significant step in Korea-France relations, with concrete targets in trade, employment, and technological advancement. Both nations have outlined clear goals, including job creation and expanded cooperation in cutting-edge industries. The talks will set the foundation for future collaboration ahead of the 140th anniversary celebrations.
