Luxury brands recognized in first-ever honors for ethical excellence

In the heart of London, on February 25, 2023, the Positive Luxury Awards recognised and celebrated the efforts of brands committed to sustainability and social responsibility. Among the esteemed winners were SALT Resorts and Selfridges.

SALT Resorts, a trailblazer in sustainable luxury, won the Brand of the Year Award, sponsored by Rakuten. The brand's commitment to local communities and minimising its carbon footprint was praised by Diana Verde Nieto, co-founder of Positive Luxury. Paul Jones, from SALT Resorts, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting their efforts to source locally and support local artisans.

One of their resorts, Salt of Palmar, has made significant strides in minimising its environmental impact. The resort's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its operations, as it also supports local artisans and educates children about plastic waste.

Another standout winner was Selfridges, the iconic department store. Selfridges won the Retailer of the Year Award for its impressive achievements in sustainability. The store has phased out exotic skins and is working towards becoming plastic-free. Diana Verde Nieto acknowledged Selfridges' efforts, commending their work in reducing their carbon footprint and beating their 2020 carbon reduction target.

Selfridges' commitment to sustainability was further acknowledged by Arena Flowers, who sponsored the CSR Campaign of the Year and praised Selfridges' dedication to the cause.

The evening's Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Carole Bamford. Bamford, a pioneer in the luxury lifestyle industry, has made significant contributions to social and environmental sustainability. Before receiving the award, Bamford had already gained recognition for her work, including founding the Bamford brand, known for organic skincare, wellness, and sustainable farming.

Bamford's impact extends beyond the beauty and health industries. She has established creative centres to preserve artisanal skills, built schools and communities to support vulnerable women and children, and collaborated with organisations such as the NSPCC, the Soil Association, and the slow food movement.

In her acceptance speech, Bamford expressed her gratitude for the honour and reiterated her commitment to social and environmental sustainability. It is clear that her influence will continue to shape the luxury industry for years to come.
