Lufthansa Pilots Threaten Strikes Over Pension Dispute

Lufthansa passengers may face disruption in the coming weeks as the airline's pilots threaten strikes. The Cockpit Association (VC), representing around 4,800 pilots, has voted overwhelmingly in favor of industrial action. The union demands a significant increase in the employer's contribution to company pensions.

The dispute centers around Lufthansa's plans to outsource smaller aircraft and pilot jobs to other airlines like Delta Airlines and American Airlines by 2030. The VC argues that this move threatens the security of its members' pensions. In response, Lufthansa has warned of a strike involving at least 70% of its affected pilots, with 96% of Lufthansa Cargo pilots voting in favor of the action.

The VC's Tariff Commission and board will meet on Wednesday to discuss further steps. The union seeks a tripling of the employer's contribution to company pensions. Lufthansa, however, cites its ongoing restructuring program and limited funds for increasing pension provision.

No specific strike date has been announced yet, leaving Lufthansa passengers in limbo. The airline and the VC must now engage in negotiations to resolve the pension dispute and prevent potential disruptions to flights. Both parties must consider the impact on passengers and the airline's reputation while seeking a resolution.
