Lübeck’s population soars to 50-year high amid tourism and economic growth

Lübeck has reached its highest population in nearly 50 years, with 223,156 residents recorded at the end of 2024. The city’s latest Statistical Yearbook for 2023–2025 also reveals growth in tourism, housing, and economic output. Over 359,000 visitors explored its museums last year, while overnight stays in larger accommodations topped 2.27 million by late 2025.

The newly published Lübeck Statistical Yearbook spans 340 pages, packed with 300 charts, 239 tables, and 18 maps. It covers everything from demographics to the environment and is freely available online at www.luebeck.de/jahrbuch. No specific authority is named for its production, but the data paints a detailed picture of the city’s progress.

Population figures hit a peak not seen since 1978, rising to 223,156 by December 2024. Alongside this, the number of registered motor vehicles climbed to 122,646, including 102,826 passenger cars as of January 2025. Housing also expanded, with a 5.6% increase in units over the past decade, reaching 122,356 in total. Tourism thrived in 2024, with major museums like the European Hansemuseum and Holstentor drawing crowds. The city’s accommodations with ten or more beds logged over 2.27 million overnight stays—already 100,000 more than the previous year by September 2025. Meanwhile, early childhood education saw 5,658 places and 1,553 daycare spots, achieving an 88.4% coverage rate. Economic growth was equally notable. Lübeck’s GDP reached €12.4 billion in 2022, a 34% jump since 2015. Climate data also featured, showing average annual temperatures from 2001 to 2015 were 0.8°C warmer than the 1986–2000 average.

The yearbook highlights Lübeck’s steady expansion across multiple sectors. With rising population, tourism, and economic figures, the data provides a clear snapshot of the city’s development. The full report remains accessible online for those seeking further details.
