Lowered apple yield anticipated in Belarus
In the realm of Belarusian agriculture, discussions on potato production and apple supply are of significant focus.
During a recent meeting, President Alexander Lukashenko underscored the need for a production increase in potatoes. He affirmed that the country's agrarians possess the required skills to yield high-quality produce, with a target to fulfill both domestic and Russian market demands. Lukashenko expressed that this move is not merely charitable, but also financially beneficial, as Belarusian potatoes are anticipated to be in high demand due to frost-induced crop damages in neighboring countries.
In addition to potatoes, Lukashenko also directed for the storage of other vegetables such as beets, cabbage, carrots, and onions in stabilization funds, with adequate storage solutions already planned.
Concerning apples, Lukashenko hinted at a potentially lower crop yield for this year. He urged the government to prepare for potential purchases of apples, both for immediate storage and potential sales during the off-season.
The Belarusian agricultural sector is currently grappling with a significant drop in potato production—a 22.6% decline compared to 2023. Despite this domestic decline, Belarus has observed a surge in potato exports to Russia, marking a 60.8% increase.
In an effort to ensure food security and stabilize the market, Belarus recently lifted import bans on potatoes, onions, cabbage, and apples from the European Union. This move comes as the country prepares for potential shortages and aims to maintain a steady supply of these key crops.
The Belarusian government is emphasizing the importance of improving storage infrastructure and maintaining stabilization stocks to manage volatile production and demand. This strategic approach is aimed at ensuring a consistent food supply and capitalizing on export opportunities.
