Nearly a quarter of tourism businesses view climate change positively - Lower Saxony’s Tourism Adapts to Climate Change with Bold New Measures
Lower Saxony's tourism sector is responding to climate change, with many businesses adopting climate adaptation measures. These include building modifications like insulation, shading, and air conditioning. Organizations like TourismusMarketing Niedersachsen GmbH (TMN), IHKN, and DEHOGA are supporting this shift.
Climate change is transforming tourism in Lower Saxony. Businesses are experiencing more scorching days, heavier rainfall, and less snow in the Harz Mountains. Despite these challenges, nearly as many businesses expect positive effects as negative ones. About one-third have already implemented climate adaptation measures, primarily structural changes.
Extended seasons due to milder temperatures in spring and autumn, and new visitor demographics, are seen as potential opportunities. However, costs, bureaucracy, and staff shortages are barriers to further adaptation. The Lower Saxony Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKN) is calling for targeted funding, streamlined approval processes, and regional advisory services to support businesses.
Climate adaptation measures are being embraced by tourism businesses in Lower Saxony. While challenges remain, particularly in terms of cost and bureaucracy, organizations are stepping up to support the sector's transition. The future of tourism in the region is expected to be shaped by these changes.
