Lörrach's library raises fees for the first time since 2017
Lörrach's city library is set to update its fees and usage rules for the first time since 2017. The changes come as the council responds to higher costs and expanded services. A vote on the new structure will take place on March 26, 2026, with implementation planned for April 15, 2026.
Under the revised system, adult membership fees will rise from €20 to €25 per year. Partner and family passes will increase from €35 to €45, while discounted rates will go up from €10 to €13. Children and teenagers, however, will continue to access the library for free.
The updates also include clearer loan periods and modernised wording in the usage regulations. Borrowers will now have the option to extend loan terms twice, a change from the previous policy. Certain media services, previously charged separately, will now be covered by the annual membership fee. Individual borrowing fees for specific media will also see adjustments. The city expects these changes to bring in an extra €28,000 in annual revenue. No data is available on how similar 'Library of Things' concepts in other German cities have affected visitor numbers or borrowing statistics.
The proposed fee revisions will go before the city council for approval on March 26, 2026. If passed, the new rules will take effect on April 15, 2026. The adjustments aim to balance rising operational costs while maintaining free access for younger users.
