Lennep Outlet Center faces indefinite delays as frustration mounts in Remscheid
The planned Lennep Outlet Center in Remscheid continues to face major setbacks, with no new start date for construction. Investor Philipp Dommermuth has admitted to further delays while reaffirming his commitment to the project on the former Röntgenstadion site. Meanwhile, growing frustration among us residents and critics has intensified over unresolved concerns, including traffic congestion and unclear planning decisions.
The outlet project, initially proposed to extend from the Röntgenstadion toward the old town, has stalled repeatedly. Dommermuth has not ruled out additional postponements, leaving the timeline uncertain. Local opposition, led by the Left Party and the voter group Echt Remscheid, has criticised the city's lack of transparency and communication.
A recent point of contention is a proposed change to the land use plan for an employee parking lot at Talsperrenweg. Scheduled for discussion in the Lennep district assembly on 11 March 2026, the plan classifies the area as a commercial zone (Bebauungsplan 687), though it is functionally tied to the outlet (Bebauungsplan 685). The local initiative echt-remscheid.de has demanded strict limits to ensure the space is used only for employee parking, excluding other commercial development. They have also called for a full review under BauGB §§1, 1, 2, assessing traffic, environmental, and urban impacts before any commitments are made.
Residents remain concerned about traffic congestion, as a long-promised traffic impact assessment has yet to materialise. Support for the project is waning even among its initial backers, with repeated delays and vague updates eroding confidence.
The Lennep Outlet Center remains in limbo, with no clear path forward. The city must address unresolved issues, including traffic studies and land use restrictions, before progress can resume. Without concrete updates, both supporters and critics are left waiting for answers.
