Legendary homeopathic producer Hanosan collapses after 76 years of tradition
Hanosan GmbH, a renowned producer of homeopathic remedies, has officially shut down after declaring insolvency in December 2024. The company, based in Garbsen, Lower Saxony, ceased operations following failed insolvency proceedings earlier this year. Authorities have now ordered a full product recall of its medicinal products as a precautionary measure.
Founded in 1948, Hanosan specialized in homeopathic treatments, producing around 200 different medications. These included single-agent and combination remedies, along with products like a propolis ointment and the herbal liqueur Plauzenbügler. The firm also acted as a contract manufacturer for other companies.
The company took pride in its traditional methods, creating most mother tinctures and dilutions in-house. Potentization—the process of preparing homeopathic remedies—was done manually, following established practices. At its peak, Hanosan employed about 30 people.
Despite generating annual revenues in the low single-digit millions, the business struggled with losses for years. After declaring insolvency in late 2024, proceedings began in February but ultimately collapsed. Liquidation followed, marking the end of the company’s 76-year history.
While all batches of Hanosan’s medicinal products are being recalled, regulators stress this is a formal requirement. No health risks have been identified. Dietary supplements and cosmetics from the brand remain unaffected by the product recall.
Customers with concerns about side effects or product quality are advised to contact Zicura Pharma Solutions. Meanwhile, Propharma GmbH & Co. KG has taken over as the contract manufacturer for Hanosan’s remaining products.
The closure of Hanosan ends a long chapter in homeopathic medicine production. The product recall applies only to medicinal items, with no reported safety issues. Former customers and partners must now turn to alternative suppliers for similar treatments.
