Latvia Steps Up to Support Moldova in Energy Crisis, EU Appoints First Latvian Expert to Crisis Management Mission

Latvia has stepped up to support Moldova in its energy crisis, demonstrating solidarity with the Moldovan people affected by Russia's gas supply cut-off to the Transnistrian region. The Latvian cabinet has allocated €50,000 to help mitigate the crisis and bolster Moldova's resilience.

The EU, through its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), maintains 13 civilian missions worldwide, including in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Āķītis, a Latvian expert, has been selected to serve as an advisor on crisis management for the EU's mission in Moldova (EUPM Moldova). This is the first such appointment for a Latvian civilian expert in Moldova.

Established in 2023, EUPM Moldova aims to enhance Moldova's security sector resilience against hybrid threats, cyber-attacks, and disinformation. Āķītis' role involves advising on law enforcement reforms and supporting police development in the country. The allocation from Latvia comes in response to an appeal from Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean for international support to tackle the energy crisis. Other EU Member States and the European Commission have also pledged or provided assistance.

Latvia's contribution of €50,000 is a significant show of support for Moldova during its energy crisis. Āķītis' appointment as the first Latvian civilian expert to EUPM Moldova underscores the EU's commitment to bolstering Moldova's security and resilience.
