Retailers in Hesse are facing a challenging holiday season as rising prices push shoppers to cut back on gift spending. With November and December usually the busiest months for sales, many businesses now rely on a last-minute rush before Christmas Eve to boost their figures.

Sales during the fourth weekend of Advent fell below expectations for most stores in the region. Werner Krämer, management director of the Hessian Trade Association, noted that consumer caution continues to shape this year’s shopping trends. Many people are delaying purchases, leaving retailers to depend heavily on the final 2.5 days before Christmas.

Not all businesses are struggling, however. Some smaller shops reported stable or even slightly improved sales compared to previous years. Yet the overall mood remains uncertain, with shoppers prioritising essentials over non-essential gifts. The shift in spending habits reflects broader economic pressures. Higher living costs have led many to reduce their holiday budgets, making the last-minute shopping period even more critical for retailers’ bottom lines.

The holiday season in Hesse is proving tougher than usual, with retailers banking on a final surge in sales. While some smaller stores have held steady, the broader trend points to restrained spending. The coming days will determine whether the season meets expectations or falls short.
