KYTC Announces Changes to KY 8 Licking River Bridge Project, Including Bridge Closure and Free Shuttle Service

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has announced changes to the KY 8 Licking River Bridge project, including a reduced weight limit for the Roebling Suspension Bridge and a free shuttle service for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge will close in January 2026, with demolition starting in Spring 2026, to expedite construction by approximately one year.

The Roebling Suspension Bridge will operate with a reduced weight limit, making it unavailable as a detour option for vehicles exceeding this limit. Motorists will need to use the Girl Scout Bridge instead, adding approximately five minutes to their commute.

To assist pedestrians and cyclists, a partnership between KYTC and TANK has established the 'Licking River Link' shuttle service. This free service will cater to those relying on the bridge for essential needs such as daycare, employment, and groceries. The shuttle will operate seven days a week, looping in one direction due to Scott/Greenup Streets being one-way. It will stop at multiple locations in Newport and Covington, completing a loop every 30 minutes during operating hours.

The KY 8 Licking River Bridge is expected to reopen to traffic by Summer 2028, with the project completion anticipated by Fall 2028. Until then, motorists should plan for the detour and pedestrians and cyclists can utilize the Licking River Link shuttle service for a safer and improved connection between Covington and Newport.
