Kuwait boosts smart meter rollout in essential industries to combat energy inefficiency
Hear it Straight
Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy is full steam ahead with the installation of smart meters across farming, industrial, and commercial sectors. As per Al-Jarida daily, this multi-sector initiative is being carried out hand in hand with the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources, the Public Authority for Industry, and the Ministry of Commerce.
The main objective? To conserve energy, elevate overall resource efficiency, and digitally transform the nation. Teams from the Electricity Department are presently hustling in Al-Wafra, collaborating with the Public Authority for Agriculture on farms as part of an ambitious nationwide plan to trade outdated mechanical meters with cutting-edge electronic ones, offering precise consumption monitoring and better management capabilities.
Noteworthy progress has been made – over 182,000 electronic meters have already been set up across the country, a significant milestone in Kuwait's digital transformation journey and its quest to keep electricity wastage to a minimum.
However, the path hasn't been all rosy. Some farm owners have gone to lengths to block technicians from accessing their premises, employing guard dogs or other individuals to thwart the installation process. This has necessitated increased coordination with authorities and the farmers themselves to successfully complete installation.
Despite these hurdles, the Ministry remains unwavering in its commitment to see the smart meter rollout through in all target sectors. Officials stress that the project is key to reducing unnecessary consumption and alleviating pressure on the power grid during peak hours, bolstering the stability of the nation's electricity services.
