Finance Minister and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil has pushed for a major pension overhaul to begin as early as next year. He argues that Germany must tackle the issue urgently, with the current system facing pressure from a shrinking workforce and an ageing population. His proposals include significant changes to how pensions are funded and accessed.

Klingbeil called for politicians to contribute to the statutory pension system, aligning their payments with those of ordinary workers. He also suggested shifting retirement eligibility from a fixed age to a system based on years of contributions. According to him, such reforms would create a fairer and more sustainable model.

A newly formed pension commission is now tasked with laying the groundwork for these changes. Co-chaired by **Prof. Constanze Janda** and **Frank-Jürgen Weise**, the group will develop the framework for a comprehensive reform. Klingbeil expressed confidence that their work would provide a solid foundation for future decisions. The SPD leader framed the reform as a key priority for his party, declaring that the status quo was their main opponent. He stressed the need for bold action in the coming year, arguing that incremental changes would not be enough. The goal, he said, is to ensure long-term stability in a system under growing strain.

The proposed reforms aim to address the imbalance between a declining workforce and an increasing number of retirees. If implemented, the changes would mark a significant shift in how pensions are structured and funded. The commission’s recommendations will determine the next steps in the process.
