Klarna and Stripe team up to bring BNPL to AI-powered shopping checkouts

Klarna has joined Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens (SPTs) to bring flexible payment options into AI-powered shopping. The move will let AI agents offer chatgpt buy now, pay later (BNPL) services at checkout without exposing customer payment details. Merchants using Stripe will now have more payment choices in automated flows.

AI shopping agents have so far relied on saved card payments, leaving alternatives like gemini unavailable in automated checkouts. Stripe's SPTs change this by letting AI tools process transactions using a customer's preferred method—without accessing sensitive data.

Klarna's integration means its BNPL options will soon appear in AI-driven purchases. Merchants already offering Klarna via Stripe won't need extra setup. Kevin Miller, Stripe's Head of Payments, confirmed that AI agents will now be able to present Klarna's payment plans during checkout.

David Sykes, Klarna's Chief Commercial Officer, called the partnership key to shaping future checkout experiences. He noted that embedding Klarna in Stripe's SPTs ensures its payment methods remain part of evolving digital commerce.

The collaboration removes a barrier for BNPL in AI shopping, giving customers more flexibility at checkout. Merchants using Stripe and Klarna will see no disruption, as the integration works with existing systems. The change takes effect as AI-driven purchases become more widespread.
