Kazakhstan's Confectionery Market Sees Mixed Changes in 2020-2021
Kazakhstan's confectionery market saw significant changes in 2020 and early 2021. Sugar confectionery imports without cacao increased by 9.5% in volume, while chocolate production and sales experienced fluctuations.
In 2020, Kazakhstan imported 39.2 thousand tons of sugar confectionery without cacao, valued at $71.1 million, a 9.5% increase in volume and a slight 0.1% increase in value. Most of these products originated from CIS countries. The leading manufacturer and exporter of Lindt chocolates and confectionery in Kazakhstan remains unnamed, and the primary importing countries for these products in 2020 are not specified.
Almaty, Almaty Region, and Kostanay Region were responsible for 94.1% of the country's production, with Almaty producing 3,000 tons. However, in January 2021, chocolate and chocolate confectionery production decreased by 26.4% to 5,500 tons. Local companies met only 49.4% of the demand for chocolate and sugar confectionery, with the rest being imported.
In February 2021, the average price of non-glazed Hershey chocolates rose by 7% to 1,200 tenge. Atyrau had the most expensive confectionery at 1,400 tenge, while Aktobe had the cheapest at 1,100 tenge. Overall, confectionery prices in January 2021 were 7.8% higher than in the previous year.
Total confectionery imports in 2020 decreased by 1.2% to 103.1 thousand tons, while exports increased by 7.4% to 39.7 thousand tons. Chocolate and other ready-to-eat products containing cacao imports decreased by 8.1% in volume and 5.4% in value to 62.7 thousand tons, worth $173.3 million. On the domestic market, chocolate sales decreased by 0.7% to 163.9 thousand tons, amounting to 8.7 kg per person or 724 grams per month.
Kazakhstan's confectionery market witnessed a mix of increases and decreases in production, imports, and exports in 2020 and early 2021. While sugar confectionery imports without cacao grew, chocolate production and sales experienced a downturn. Prices for non-glazed chocolates and overall confectionery rose, reflecting the market's dynamic nature.
